This study abroad experience has been something that I wouldn’t have thought possible. During this experience I have made many new friends, tried new foods and have p seen so many new sites. Many of the places that I’ve gone to were places that I wouldn’t even have thought to look it up as they are not in my immediate comfort zone. However, through this trip abroad I have gotten to experience so many things I wouldn’t have chosen to do or thought of, such as ride the metro all the way to the end and walk around just to go to the beach. Through coming here I have gained a lot of new experiences that I won’t be able to replicate anywhere in the US. Even as I’m writing this post I’m sitting in my hotel room with the doors open listening to the waves and staring at the ocean.
Something that I’ve not only learned this trip but has really been put into perspective for me is that even in the past people still had free time where they behaved in the exact same way we still do today even over 2000 years after. An example of this is something I saw at the Acropolis Museum where there was a full set of six sided die as well as game pieces that go on a glass board and was stated from the first century BC through the first century AD. Before going through this museum I had it in my head that back then people wouldn’t have the free time to just sit down with their family or friends and be able to play a board game. It really humanized people from ancient civilizations in a way that in my mind I didn’t consider before.
Another thing that stuck with me was when we were going through the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, in one of the rooms there was a wall of just pieces of hair that have chipped off from different statues. The hair consisted of many different types including very curly, straight, and wavy. Seeing this wall helped me put how many small details go into making a statue into perspective. It showed me that there were many small details that the sculptors put into their work that can be easily overlooked if you're not paying close attention to the specific trait. The last thing that stuck with me this trip is that most of the art seen around the city’s are very detailed. That mainly refers to the buildings, as there were many that had intricate designs. Quite a few of the details were smaller things that could be overlooked, however care was put into designing the buildings and that was something I enjoyed looking for as I walked around the different sites.
